Eighteen students from Schweitzer's Anaheim Achieves program were treated to a new book and literary celebration thanks to World Book Night and fifth grade teacher, Sheila Smith. This nonprofit organization donates books around the nation to be given out in an effort to promote literacy. Schweitzer's students received The Lightning Thief, the first book in the popular Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. During the celebration at Schweitzer School, the upper grade students discovered Greek mythology, which they will encounter in the story, as well as feasting on 'ambrosia' and 'nectar'-food any demi-god needs. The event was a success, with a number of the students reporting the next day that they had already plunged into the adventure!
On March 1st, thanks to the outstanding efforts of our Literacy Coach, Joan Ende, we had a wonderful time celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday on Read Across America Day. We had over 90 parents, the Mayor of Anaheim and the Mayor Pro Temp, District Office employees, including our Superintendent Dr. Curtin, Community representatives from such organizations as APD and the Angels baseball team, retirees from MSD and friends and family members of our staff reading to students in all classrooms throughout the day. Our celebration of the joy of reading will continue all next week because the PTA will be sponsoring special events for our annual spring Book Fair.
