Welcome to the website of Dr. Jonas E. Salk School! Named for a hero who was deemed "The Man Who Saved the Children," Dr. Jonas E. Salk is a place where everyone works collaboratively to provide a safe, happy, and invigorating learning environment. We are dedicated to academic excellence and to the development of individuals of good character. Salk's dynamic school community is committed to working as a team to ensure that our students are actively engaged in a rigorous, standards-based, cohesive core curriculum that is meaningful and pertinent to their lives. We hold high expectations for our students and are unified in the belief that all students can achieve high standards.
In addition to the core curriculum, a variety of programs enrich students' experiences and connect them to school. Accelerated Reader allows our students to earn points and prizes for improving their reading comprehension. Jiji Math offers our students the opportunity to build conceptual knowledge of key grade level math concepts. After school activities include: Anaheim Achieves, Success Through Chess, and our district sponsored music program that includes choir and instrumental music. Students are encouraged to participate in leadership roles through the Student Council and Peer Assistance Leadership (PAL). The district-adopted Positive Behavioral Intervention & Supports (PBIS) program provides a foundation for a positive and respectful learning atmosphere. Students are recognized daily, both in classrooms and school-wide, for exhibiting the qualities of our Hawks Rules! (Have respect, Act responsibly, Work together, Keep safe and Soar to success!)
Numerous community partnerships empower our students and families and contribute to our positive and caring climate. Anaheim Achieves, of the Anaheim Family YMCA, provides after school tutoring, extracurricular classes, and sports and recreation. Magnolia High School students serve as Regional Occupation Program instructional aides regularly in our classrooms, providing academic support and mentorship to students. We are also pleased to have on campus an excellent pre-school program that specializes in early student learning and literacy, and prepares our students for kindergarten success.
Salk School is extremely fortunate to have the support of parents who are actively involved in their children's education. Parents serve in leadership roles such as the School Site Council, English Learner Advisory Committee, and Parent Teacher Association (PTA). Our PTA facilitates numerous experiences for our students including educational assemblies, family evenings and the Scholastic Book Fair.
At Dr. Jonas E. Salk School, students are empowered to become skillful, inquisitive, life-long learners who will act responsibly and exert a positive influence on one another, their community, and the world.

On Saturday, April 20, 2013, Salk students from the classrooms of Mr. Bleifield, Ms. Deras, Ms. Figueroa, and Ms. Mateos, performed a group dance at Orange County's 37th Annual VSA Festival at Westfield MainPlace in Santa Ana. This year, the Festival's theme was "Color Me Green" and the students' performance was choreographed by Ms. Robin Olive of Infinite Dreams. VSA Orange County, a chapter of VSA California, The State Organization on Arts and Disability, annually sponsors this festival of visual and performing arts for students with disabilities. The art exhibit portion of the festival includes art work from students at Baden-Powell and Salk schools and continues through May 12, 2013, at Westfield MainPlace in Santa Ana.
During the month of November Salk PTA sponsored two McTeacher Night events for our students and their families. Salk staff enthusiastically worked the drive-through window, sold cookies, made French fries, and took orders at the counter. The events earned more than $1100 for our PTA while the families and teachers all had a great time. Thanks to the McDonald's staff for their generosity and support!
On Wednesday, November 7 the Salk Student Council sponsored Jerseys for New Jersey day. Students donated $1.00 for the privilege of wearing their favorite team jersey. Students wore their best baseball, basketball, soccer, and college jerseys to school and promoted a good cause as well. Student Council collected more than $630.00! All proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross to support the recovery efforts in New Jersey. Go Seahawks!
On September 27th over 120 volunteers from the Give and Grow Non-Profit Organization came to Salk School to brighten up our campus. They painted our Salk Seahawk on one of our walls, added a mural of sports activities along the primary playground, and reinforced our PBIS "Hawks Rules" by painting a mural on our upper grade side and by hanging a sign on one of our portables. They also added colors to our blacktop games, painted a new USA map on the blacktop, and created backpack carts for our classrooms. They also added the Salk Seahawk to our ball wall. The highlight was the installation of a school garden. This garden will house plants native to California and includes benches for our students to sit to learn about the native plants or to have a place to read with their classmates and teacher. Salk's garden will be maintained by the ROTC students from nearby Magnolia High School. Our students and staff have a new sense of school pride thanks to the efforts of the Give and Grow Foundation!
