Magnolia School District

Dr. Albert Schweitzer

Dr. Albert Schweitzer School is one of the nine schools in the Magnolia School District in West Anaheim. Schweitzer is a neighborhood school for 700 students. All of our teachers are considered highly qualified by the State of California, and I think our parent community would agree that this is one of the finest school staffs! We are fortunate to have dedicated bilingual instructional assistants supporting students who are learning English as a second language as well as talented assistants in our special education classes. On the annual parent survey, 98% of our parents responded that their child is getting a good education at Schweitzer School.

Schweitzer School was named a California Distinguished School in 2004 due to its excellent academic program and to the collaboration of staff and parents in providing that program. I am especially proud of our personnel, who believe that all of our students will succeed academically and will develop good character with the right kind of support.

We are pleased to have the support of parents who get involved in their children's education through parent committees (Parent-Teacher Association, School Site Council, English Language Advisory Committee). Parents frequently volunteer in classrooms or support students by helping teachers make materials for the classroom. Many of our parents help provide special activities by volunteering their time at the PTA bookfair, the school carnival, the sixth grade promotion, on study trips, with school pictures and our yearbook, and in recognizing student achievement.

I invite you to visit Schweitzer School, attend our Open House and other parent activities, and talk to our community members to find out more great things about the opportunities your child will have at Schweitzer School.

Schweitzer Week 33

Good evening. This is Susan Smith, principal of Schweitzer School. The annual Parent Need Survey is now available for you to complete on the Magnolia School District website. The address is www.msd.k12.ca.us. It is available in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. Computers will also be available for you to complete the survey at Open House on Thursday May 30th. Please try to find time to complete this survey. Your feedback will help us plan family and parent activities for the next school year.

Next Thursday will be our final RIF day. All students will receive a free book of their choice. Our Coach Mrs. Ende does an outstanding job finding books for every age and reading interest. That evening the upper graders who have participated in the after school music program will be performing at 6:00 pm in the multipurpose room. Please join us for a wonderful evening of musical enjoyment.

We are very proud of our 18 sixth graders who have been accepted to the AVID program at Dale next year. This is a special program for which each student had to complete an extensive application process and participate in a group interview with the Dale instructors. This program will provide them through junior high and high school with individualized academic support and the information necessary to realize their goal of attending a college or university after they graduate from high school. Congratulation to all of you!

The shirt color for Spirit Day next week will be dark green. Have a great weekend. Thank you and good night.

Schweitzer Week 32

Good evening. This is Susan Smith, principal of Schweitzer School. Well, for most of our students, state testing is complete. Next week we complete testing for all students and pack up the completed student answer sheets and test materials for shipment back to the state. You will be receiving individual student report of test results by US mail from our District Office in August. We at the school will be using the results to continue to improve the educational program we offer and plan extra support for students whose score show a need. Thank you again for your support and encouragement of your child so that each was able to do his or her personal best.

The next school-wide big event on our school calendar is Open House on Thursday May 30th. Our students and teachers will be busy preparing their classroom displays of learning to share with you.

Our sixth graders are beginning their end of the year activities in celebration of their promotion to junior high. Promotion pictures will be taken on Wednesday May 15rd. You will receive one free copy in a special holder along with your child's certificate of promotion on the last day. A flyer about purchasing options was sent home on Monday. THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UP DATE FOR STUDENTS NOT HERE ON THE 15th.

If your child is missing an item of clothing and says it was lost here at school, please stop the office to get a visitor's pass so you can check our lost and found. We will be donating any leftover items to a local organization on Friday May 17th.

The color for school shirts for next Friday's spirit day are white or gray. Happy Mother's Day to the Moms and Caretakers of our students and to the mothers on our staff. We thank you for sending us students ready to learn each day.

Have a great weekend. Thank you and good night.

Schweitzer Week 31

Good evening. This is Susan Smith, principal of Schweitzer School. We had an excellent week of testing. Teachers report that our students are focused and are giving 100% effort. Thank you for your support in prepping your child by making sure each has had a good night's sleep, a healthy breakfast, arrive on time, are relaxed and know that you are confident they will do well. Next week we continue testing on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. A few students will be testing on Monday and Friday as make-up if they have been absent or arrive late after their class has begun working on a testing day.

Congratulations to Sayed Sotelo who was honored by the Women's Auxiliary of the Anaheim Family YMCA at their annual luncheon. Sixth graders from 36 schools in our area were each recognized for their service to their school and their community.

And this weekend there will be food, games, carnival rides and music at the 43nd annual family-friendly Cinco de Mayo Fiesta andCarnival in Anaheim, taking place May 2-5 at La Palma Park in Anaheim.  The fiesta will feature free live entertainment, including the best of mariachi bands on Saturday and Sunday. La Palma Park is located at the corner of Harbor Blvd. and La Palma Ave.

Shirt color for spirit day next Friday is collegiate wear or purple. Have a great weekend. Thank you and good night.

World Book Night

photo - 5th gradeEighteen students from Schweitzer's Anaheim Achieves program were treated to a new book and literary celebration thanks to World Book Night and fifth grade teacher, Sheila Smith. This nonprofit organization donates books around the nation to be given out in an effort to promote literacy. Schweitzer's students received The Lightning Thief, the first book in the popular Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. During the celebration at Schweitzer School, the upper grade students discovered Greek mythology, which they will encounter in the story, as well as feasting on 'ambrosia' and 'nectar'-food any demi-god needs. The event was a success, with a number of the students reporting the next day that they had already plunged into the adventure!

Schweitzer School's 100 AR Point Class!

The students in Mrs. Gabehart's fifth grade class are proudly sporting their special 100 AR points shirts. They are 32 of the 135 students who have earned them so far this year at Schweitzer School. What is unique about these students is that they are members of the first class in which every student has earned this special honor! Room 20, we are so proud of you!

A New Park for the Schweitzer School Community

Over 200 volunteers from Disneyland, the Y, the City of Anaheim, MSD and the Schweitzer School community worked over 2 days remodeling the public park adjacent to the school.  They installed a new playground, build benches and planted 20 trees to beautify the park. Schweitzer upper graders painted decorative trash cans, wall plaques and sign posts.
