Magnolia School District

Lord Baden-Powell

Lord Baden-Powell School is one of the nine schools in the Magnolia School District in West Anaheim. Our school is a neighborhood school and has an enrollment of approximately 640 students in general education. We also educate approximately 60 special needs students from within and outside our District in our severely and orthopedically handicapped special day classes. Our students are culturally and socio-economically diverse.

All of our teachers are considered highly qualified by the State of California. We are also fortunate to have highly qualified bilingual instructional assistants supporting students who are learning English as a second language as well as those with special needs in our special day classes. We are extremely proud of the fact that last year we met all our federal and state learning growth targets in the areas of English-Language Arts and Mathematics. On the annual parent survey, 97% of our parents responded that their child is getting a good education at Lord Baden-Powell School.

We are pleased to have the support of parents who get involved in their children's education through parent committees (Parent-Teacher Association, School Site Council, English Language Advisory Committee). Parents frequently volunteer in classrooms, support students by helping teachers make materials for the classroom and chaperone field trips. Many of our parents help provide special activities by volunteering their time at the PTA book fair, the sixth grade promotion, on study trips, school pictures, our yearbook and other family events. Many families attend our monthly student recognition assemblies, grade level performances and family literacy and science nights.

Our students, staff and I invite you to visit Lord Baden-Powell School, or to attend our Open House and other parent/student/teacher activities in order to see the powerful learning that takes place here.

Congratulations to Baden-Powell School and Debbie Varon

Baden Powell students were surprised to find out that today was not just an ordinary fire drill! The students had an unexpected visit from Kyla Groeneveld (School and Community Supervisor) and Deirdre Hill (PAL Consultant/Trainer) from Orange County Department of Ed. and was surprised with the announcement that Baden Powell won the 2012-2013 Outstanding PAL® Program Award! Through the leadership of the PAL Advisors: Debbie Varon, Stacy Bugaren, and Kristin Sauter, help make the PAL program an integral part of the school. PAL students are involved in teams such as Peer-helping Team, Game Team, Conflict Management Team, Anti-Bullying Team, etc. to build on their strengths and acquire leadership skills.

Right afterwards, there was ANOTHER unexpected surprise...but this time, it was for a very dedicated staff member, Debbie Varon, who won the 2012-2013 Outstanding PAL® Advisor Award!

"I really am only as good as the students that participate." –Debbie Varon

Baden-Powell Teacher Published with NCTM

Sarah Anderson, 6th grade teacher at Baden-Powell, and CLIME participating teacher, has co-authored an article titled, "Restoring Order to Permutations & Combinations."  The article is in the March 2013 edition of "Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School" magazine published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).  Sarah co-wrote the article with Cal State Fullerton Assistant Professor Patrick M. Kimani and Renamarie T. Gibbs, who works with the CLIME program.  Sarah and Dr. Kimani will be presenting on the same topic of the article at the National Conference of NCTM in April.  We are proud of Sarah at Baden-Powell and know she will be a wonderful addition to the National conference, says Bill Bailey, Principal Baden-Powell.

Baden-Powell Visits CSUF

On Wednesday November 14 the fifth grade students from Baden-Powell School went to visit California State University Fullerton. The students went to experience what college would be like as part of the Baden-Powell AVID  (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program. The students were able to go on a guided tour given by a Titan Ambassador. They saw the eight different colleges within CSUF, such as Science and Engineering. Students were also able to go into the Student Union and see the bowling alley and rock-climbing wall.  It was a great experience for the students to view what life is like on a college campus. One student said,    “Seeing all the interesting things makes me want to go to college.”

Collaboration and Fun Comes to Baden-Powell’s Halloween Celebration

This year's Baden-Powell's traditional Halloween festivities were modified to become a great success. Baden-Powell's Ortho Unit collaborated with their General Education peers and buddies in interactive Halloween theme learning lessons and activities. Students had the opportunity learning and working side by side reading stories, decorating paper pumpkins, describing haunted houses and predicting if pumpkins sink or float. All students enjoyed the festivities alongside their buddies. Baden-Powell has created a new tradition that will continue benefiting and enriching all students.
